Instead of starting Tuesday against the Phillies, Kawakami will now start Friday against the Nationals. That means Kawakami will be working on eight days' rest instead of just four.
The Japanese righty could probably pitch Tuesday if needed. However, the Braves have an off-day Monday, giving them the opportunity to skip Kawakami's start and have Derek Lowe start instead on regular rest. The moves also allows starter Tommy Hanson to have an extra day of rest after battling the flu this week.
In 14 starts this season, Kawakami has posted a 4.25 ERA and a 4-6 record. However, in his past four starts, his ERA has been 3.15 and opponents have hit just .186 against him.
