Chipper, McCann need help in ASG race

Chipper, McCann need help in ASG race

|
With fans having a little more than a week to cast their final All-Star ballots, both Chipper Jones and Brian McCann have reason to remain hopeful about the possibility of being voted into the National League's starting lineup.

The latest balloting results show that McCann ranks second and Jones ranks third at their respective positions to represent the Senior Circuit during this year's All-Star Game on July 14 at St. Louis' Busch Stadium.

Jones remains behind Washington's Ryan Zimmerman and New York's David Wright. The Braves' third baseman has been a starter in four of his previous six All-Star appearances.

While McCann has earned an All-Star bid during each of his first three full Major League seasons, he's looking to make his first start. He still finds himself trailing St. Louis' Yadier Molina in this year's balloting.

Fans can cast their votes for starters up to 25 times with the 2009 All-Star Game Sprint Online Ballot at MLB.com and all 30 club sites until July 2 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Starting rosters will be announced during the 2009 All-Star Game Selection Show presented by Chevrolet on TBS on July 5. Baseball fans around the world will then be able to select the final player on each team via the 2009 All-Star Game Sprint Final Vote at MLB.com.

And the voting doesn't end there. Fans will have the opportunity to participate in the official voting for the Ted Williams Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet at the Midsummer Classic via the 2009 All-Star Game Sprint MVP Vote at MLB.com.

The All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX and around the world by Major League Baseball International. ESPN Radio will provide exclusive national radio play-by-play, while MLB.com will offer extensive online coverage.

Dating back to the start of the 2006 season, McCann leads all Major League catchers in slugging percentage, home runs, doubles, extra-base hits and RBIs. His batting average ranks third behind the American League duo of Joe Mauer and Victor Martinez.
