Spruill, Phoenix spoil Mesa's season finale
On the final day of the Arizona Fall League regular season Thursday, one of three games did not have Championship Game implications. But it did feature the best pitching matchup.

Braves prospect Zeke Spruill outdueled Astros counterpart Jarred Cosart in the Phoenix Desert Dogs' 8-3 victory over the Mesa Solar Sox.

Spruill (2-2) finished a rather strong AFL campaign with five innings of two-run ball. The 23-year-old right-hander gave up three hits while striking out two batters. He recorded 10 outs on the ground.

Atlanta's sixth-ranked prospect finished with a 3.63 ERA, having allowed three runs or fewer in all seven of his starts for the Desert Dogs.

Cosart (0-3, 6.50 ERA) saw a less impressive end to his Fall League season. Houston's fourth-ranked prospect was charged with three runs (one earned) on five hits over three frames. The 22-year-old righty struck out two and issued two free passes.

Top Marlins prospect Christian Yelich struck an RBI single and Max Stassi (A's) added a two-RBI single during the Desert Dogs' three-run rally against Cosart in the third. All three runs scored with two outs.

The Dogs scored at least one run in four straight innings, beginning with the fifth. Stassi, Kyle Jensen (Marlins) and Yordy Cabrera (Marlins) all recorded two-hit games, while Jensen and Edward Salcedo (Braves) each hit a solo home run.

The Solar Sox (10-20) dropped their final four games of the season. They finished in last place in their three-team division.
