LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez recently said there was a possibility that Julio Teheran or Randall Delgado could begin the season in Atlanta's bullpen if they are not in the starting rotation. But it now sounds like both of these highly regarded prospects will be in a starting role for either Atlanta or Triple-A Gwinnett to begin the season.
"They need the innings," Gonzalez said. "We'll do what is best for their development."
With Tim Hudson likely to miss at least the season's first month as he recovers from a November back surgery, there is a good chance that either Teheran or Delgado will likely begin the season in the starting rotation. There is also a chance both could begin the year in Atlanta's rotation if Tommy Hanson is not deemed ready or Mike Minor falters during Spring Training.
The Braves' bullpen will likely include closer Craig Kimbrel, Jonny Venters, Eric O'Flaherty, Kris Medlen and Cristhian Martinez. Arodys Vizcaino, Anthony Varvaro and left-handed pitcher Robert Fish are among the top candidates for the final two bullpen spots.
