Kenshin Kawakami, pitching at Double-A Mississippi, has been placed on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain.
Kawakami, who pitched for Atlanta the past two seasons, was 1-1 with a 7.59 ERA in two starts for Mississippi this season.
The 35-year-old native of Tokushima, Japan, went 1-10 with a 5.15 ERA last season for Atlanta. In his first Major League season in 2009, Kawakami was 7-12 with a 3.86 ERA in 32 outings (25 starts).
Kawakami didn't make the big club out of Spring Training after allowing five earned runs in 12 innings in five Grapefruit League appearances.
Kawakami made his last start on April 17 and told the team about soreness the day after. He still felt soreness Tuesday, prompting the seven-day DL stint. He returned to Atlanta on Wednesday to be examined by team doctors.
