Braves looking for first sweep

Thomson, Braves going for Sunday sweep

This has been a good weekend for the Braves' starting pitching staff. John Thomson will have a chance to make sure it stays that way, when he takes the mound to face the Padres on Sunday afternoon at Turner Field.

The Braves, who lost five of seven games entering this three-game series, will be looking to complete their first series sweep of the season. If Thomson is able to pitch as well as he did his last time out, they'll certainly have a good chance.

"It's nice to win a series and now we've got a good chance to get the sweep," Adam LaRoche said. "We've just got to keep playing like we have been."

After beginning the season in the bullpen, Thomson was moved back into the rotation. Making his first start this past Monday against the Phillies, he allowed just one unearned run in five innings. He displayed an effective curveball that over the past three seasons has kept hitters off balance.

This will be the first time Thomson has faced the Padres since May 16, 2005, when he was forced to leave with a right middle finger injury that placed him on the disabled list for three months.

The Padres will counter with Woody Williams, who is also coming off a good start. He notched the win after allowing the Marlins three earned runs in five innings on Monday. He is 4-1 with a 1.94 ERA in seven career starts against the Braves.

Pitching matchup
ATL: RHP John Thomson (0-0, 2.08 ERA)
Thomson has gone 3-3 with a 3.63 ERA in 11 career starts against the Padres.

SD: RHP Woody Williams (1-0, 4.50 ERA)
Williams will be making his first start against the Braves since the 2004 season.

Player to watch
Since beginning the season with just two hits in 36 at-bats, Jeff Francoeur has recorded eight hits, including three homers, in his past 12 at-bats.
