ATLANTA -- Kris Medlen underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala. Noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews performed the procedure.
Medlen tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow during an Aug. 4 start against the Mets. The 24-year-old right-hander will likely need at least 12 months of rehab before being cleared to pitch again.
After beginning this season in the bullpen, Medlen strengthened the starting rotation while Jair Jurrjens was sidelined for two months. The Braves won 13 of the 14 games started by Medlen.
